NCCAF to organize collection of wild vegetables

Dimapur, June 2 (MExN): Coinciding with the World Environment Day, the Nagaland Community Conserved Areas Forum (NCCAF) will be organizing collection of wild vegetables from their conserved areas and orchards, for the quarantine centres and the frontline workers on June 5.

“This venture is undertaken to share the blessings of our conserved areas and orchards with our people who are quarantined and also to show our solidarity with the frontline workers who are selflessly fighting the pandemic throughout the State during these uncertain times,” Heirang Lungalang, Secretary, NCCAF stated in a press release.

“NCCAF, with a membership of almost 30 CCAs spread across the State, is extremely delighted to celebrate the Day with the rest of the World in remembering how Mother Nature provides our many needs. Nagaland is a proud State with so much green cover still being maintained, courtesy the Village Councils and the people, upholding the rich tradition of our forefathers who lived with their needs met from the bounty of their forests,” it added.

The programme is co-sponsored by the Nagaland Empowerment of People through Economic Development (NEPED).

NCCAF shocked by spurt in rampant hunting during lockdown

Last Updated on April 24, 2020 at 5:28 pm

Dimapur, April 24: The Nagaland Community Conserved Areas Forum (NCCAF) has viewed with all seriousness the recent spurt in rampant hunting in many locations of Nagaland amidst the lockdown, as wanton killing of wildlife has been declared as illegal (Wildlife Protection Act, 1972).

“It is a fact that hunting has always been a part of the Naga society as an act of survival to gather food from the forest since time immemorial; the intentions of greed was never encouraged. Our ancestors foraged for food in quantities that was required/needed and left behind the rest as it is in order not to disturb the order of the ecosystem. The harmonious balance maintained in the ecosystem is contingent to Naga living,” it said in a release.

Condemning the rampant hunting that goes against the traditional and cultural values and principles of ‘sustainable hunting’ practiced by our ancestors, the NCCAF said it has been actively involved in advocating for conservation of nature and natural resources in the Community Conserved Areas (CCAs) in the State in collaboration with Forest Department, NEPED and FES.

“And in such a world where good conservation practices should be observed by the citizens, the people of the state should know better than to use this lockdown as a gateway for hunting and destruction of the precious balance in the ecosystem. In order to avoid further deterioration of resources in the state, it is our ardent call upon concerned citizens and authorities to extend their solidarity and uphold the good conservation practices in the days to come,” it appealed.

The NCCAF also urged the concerned Department to leave no stone unturned to ensure that our fast disappearing rich biodiversity is conserved by way of creating more aggressive awareness amongst stakeholders and also giving special emphasis in weaning away hunters from further exploitation and turn them into conservationists. Nagaland CCAs form forum
Nagaland Post, Published on 23 Nov. 2014 12:44 AM IST

Representatives of Community Conserved Areas (CCAs) of Nagaland has decided to form a forum and constituted a coordination committee representing all districts of the State.

The decision to form a forum was initiated during a meeting on November 19 at NEPED Office, Kohima. Besides, the members have agreed on criteria for membership of the forum and constituted a five member group of office bearers to draft the constitution.

In September 2013, a group of CCAs had a consultative meet where the need of a common platform was first felt. Since then, the group had met twice to have a threadbare discussion on various facets of a forum.

Delivering the keynote address, the team leader of NEPED and Commissioner and Secretary, Menukhol John, has congratulated community members for their pioneering conservation efforts and mentioned that a common forum could in future help influence policy decisions regarding conservation in the state. In the meeting representatives from Khonoma CCA, Tzula Green Zone CCA, Mt Pauna CCA, Nanga Greener Zone CCA, Sendenyu CCA, PKR CCA, Totsü- Phiro CCA, Saramati- Awung CCA, Kanglatu Chantongya CCA, Phom CCA, Ghosü Bird Sanctuary, Zanubu CCA, Zipuhu- Meluri CCA and SAPO were present.

Though YLK and Satoi CCA could not attend the meeting, they sent their consent to join the forum.

The meeting was jointly facilitated by Nagaland Empowerment of People through Economic Development (NEPED) and Foundation for Ecological Security (FES). NEPED and FES have for the last three years collaboratively working towards strengthening the community conserved areas in the State.
