Mkg workshop review green zone project

A workshop on preparation of Tzula (Dikhu) Green Zone Management Plan was held in the Circuit House of Mokokchung on Monday. The workshop was organized by Tzula Green Zone Management Committee. Representatives of the Foundation for Ecological Security of Guwahati and the Nagaland Empowerment and People through Economic Development (NEPED) attended the brainstorming. The conservation project is taken up by the village council of Longsa and Ungma village in Mokokchung. The workshop highlighted a documentary on conservation of Dikhu presented by NES. The documentary is to be presented at an international platform as part of promotions of the project. The meeting discussed the background of the community conservation area system and also reviewed plans to be incorporated

Eco-tourism and recreational spot launched in Mokokchung

The Tzula (Dikhu) Green Zone Project, Mokokchung launched Eco-tourism and a recreational spot at the Tzula (Dikhu) Green Zone conserved area, Mokokchung.

The programme was launched with a vision to offer tourists insight into the impact of human beings on the environment and to foster a greater appreciation of natural habitat and provide financial benefits to the conservation project. It focuses on socially responsible travel, personal growth, and environmental sustainability.

With a vision to teach as well as to entertain and relax, the recreational spot aims to provide information on the ecology and conservation issues pertinent to the area and effectively communicate with the tourists, helping them to interpret the natural environment and pointing out the sensitive areas and fragile ecosystems. Through cultural exchange it also aims to educate visitors and help them learn about local customs and social mores.

The recreational spot will be open for bookings only to international and national institutions, recognized groups and families. Route trekking, bird watching, butterfly and moth watching, salt-licks and fish breeding spots, river-side camping etc are some of the activities and attraction of the package. The recreational spot was dedicated by associate pastor, Ungma Baptist Church in the presence of village councils of Longsa and Ungma villages. The general meeting of TZ (D)GP was also held on the same day at the spot.

Nagaland Forest Minister visits Green Zone Project

Nagaland Minister for Forest, Ecology, Wildlife, Environment and Border Affairs Y. Patton has paid a visit to Tzula (Dikhu) Green Zone Project (TGZP) and interacted with members of TGZP Management Committee along with Village Councils of Longsa and Ungma under Mokokchiung district.

According to official sources today, Mr. Patton, who was in Mokokchung for celebration of Independence Day visited the site and to gather first hand information on the ambitious project yesterday. During a brief programme, TGZPMC Chairman Tia Longkumer explained the purpose of the formation of the committee and its achievements and activity since its inception till date. Later, short speeches were also delivered by Deputy Commissioner of Mokokchung and Conservator of Forest and Chairman Longsa Village Council.


Mr. Patton in his speech expressed happiness on the success of the project and assured all possible help. He also stressed on the importance of conservation and its impact on various aspects. On the request from the committee for appointment of green soldiers, he replied that since creating posts and making appointments was not possible and could not be assured, he suggested that the same be used from the sanctioned amount against the project on a fixed pay for time being. He also said that since this project was the first of its kind in the state, the department would provide all possible necessary assistance for the project. He also assured support in its conservation effort.


Earlier, the Minister upon reaching Mokokchung also visited the site building of the proposed office of Conservator of Forest at Marepkong ward of Mokokchung town, sources said.

Nagaland Green Zone Project attracts international attention

The Tzula (Dikhu) Green Zone Project initiated and formed by the Longsa and Ungma Village Councils of the Mokokchung district on 6th April, 2010, has attracted international attention.

According to the Chairman of the TGZPMC (Tzula Green Zone Project Management Committee), Tiameren Longkumer, during the Environmental Protection Campaign programme held at Longsa Village on Saturday last, has informed that the International Forum for Community Conserve Area (ICCA) that works in Bolivia, Indonesia, Niger, Philippines and Spain, will be coming in May this year to interact with the local community and document their work, culture, flora and fauna. It may be mentioned that Piran Elavia from KIPEPEO, Mumbai, had also visited the area in November last year.

The Chairman further informed that the Committee has been receiving professional advise, financial aid and fish seedlings from the Directorate of Fisheries, Government of Nagaland. The two Village Councils have also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Department of Forest, Ecology, Environment and Wildlife and have been receiving help in different forms. The Environmental Protection Campaign was also held under the aegis of the Department. Nagaland Empowerment of People through Economic Development (NEPED) had also sponsored the Committee for an exposure trip to Arunachal Pradesh last year. It also inform that 14 neighbouring Sumi villages have agreed to join the project under the name 'Nangka (Dikhu) Greener Zone'. It was informed that a Sub-Committee has been formed to assist visitors and tourists.

Earlier, in his brief address, District Fishery Officer of Mokokchung reported that there are 3 uncommon species of fish in Dikhu River. A similar programme was held at Ungma village in the afternoon. 5 sets of LPG cylinders and stoves were distributed in the two villages after the programmes. It may be noted that hunting and fishing at Longsa and Ungma areas are banned throughout the year and defaulters are fined a prohibitive amount of Rs 50,000, sources said.

2 villages declare Dikhu River as protected green zone area


Village council members from different villages under Mokokchung and Zunheboto who share water from Dikhu River on March 3 declared the surrounding areas of Dikhu River as green zone project Phase-II initiated at Lumithsami village.

The declaration was made with officials of Tzüla (Dikhu) Green Zone Project Committee (TGZPMC) members after a marathon meeting accompanied by village Council members of Ungma and Longsa with villages located upstream of Dikhu river in Zunheboto and shared thoughts on the need of conserving the biodiversity in the society.

The village resolved to meet on March 20 so that Sumi villages could garner the consensus of the villagers on declaring Dikhu River area as a protected green zone area.

Tzula (Dikhu) Green Zone Project Launched

Tzula (Dikhu) Green Zone Project jointly taken up by Longsa and Ungma village of Mokokchung district was launched on Friday. The project was formally declared open by Alemtemshi, additional chief secretary and development commissioner. He said declaration of Tzula Green Zone project by the two villages was a small step towards preserving bio diversity. He appealed villagers to realize importance of preserving bio-diversity and assured assistance from government to make their joint efforts a movement which would serve as an example to others in the state.

According to an official bulletin, DC Mokokchung Lithrongla G. Chishi who also spoke on the occasion called upon the two villagers to make their project a “shining example” for every Nagas to follow. 

Earlier, Alemtemshi released about two lakh fingerlings to Dikhu River to mark launching of Dikhu Green Zone project and unveiled the monument of the project.

Tzula (Dikhu) Green Zone Project launches Eco Lodge

Tzula (Dikhu) Green Zone Project (TGZP) management committee in a simple program launched an Eco Lodge in the bank of Tzula (Dikhu) river with the pastor of Ungma Baptist church dedicating the rest house with a prayer. 

Village council members, church leaders, student leaders and leaders from various organisations belonging to the two villages also attended the function.

Later, after the dedicatory function, there was an interaction time which was held between the leaders of the two village and the officials of Foundation for Ecological Security (FEC) and some noted researchers and environmentalist from outside the state. 
Altogether, 14 delegates from various environmental organisations visited the Tzula (Dikhu) Green Zone Project area.

Tzula(Dikhu) Green Zone Project (TGZP) which is a brainchild of two village namely Longsa and Ungma was initiated in the year 2010 in collaboration with the dept. of forest, ecology & environment government of Nagaland and various other departments to protect and preserve flora and fauna in and around Tzula(Dikhu) river.
