Angangba Community Conserved Area, Tuensang


Inhabited by the Sangtam tribe, Angangba village is located on the banks of the Tizu River in Tuensang, the easternmost district of Nagaland. Spread over 574 hectares on the Nangrongtongpi Mountain, the pristine forest of Angangba is thriving with diverse flora and fauna.The topography of the landscape is breath-taking- characterised by high hills, mystical deep gorges and narrow valleys. It is bound by the ranges of Nangrongtongpi, Han- namathikhong and Yamkongyali. The River Tizu, locally known as Thoah is originates, from the Angangba forest. The forest harbours more than 30 different species of trees and 70 species of birds and animals. Well known for the presence of Rhododendron, the forest is also home to more than 30 species of wild flowers including a variety of orchids. Natural saltlicks located within the forest attract diverse wildlife.

Angangba village’s conservation story traces back 170 years, when the village elders has decided to conserve the Angangba forest to protect the water catchment areas for future generations. Building on the traditional conservation initiatives, the Angangba village council designated the area as a Community Conserved Area and has banned the felling of trees and jhum cultivation, and also limited the hunting season in the area.

Wildlife watch

  • Great Hornbill, Great Barbet, Flavescent Bulbul, Common Hoopoe, Coral Billed Scimitar Babbler, Laughing Thrush Sp, Grey Sibia, Red-faced Malkoha, Sergeant Eagle etc. can be spotted here. 

  • Himalayan Black Bear, Rhesus Macaque, Barking Deer, Indian Giant Flying Squirrel, Orange Bellied Himalayan Squirrel, Wild Dog, Bat Sp, Mole Sp etc. are prominent among the wild animals.
