Sendenyu Village (s) Community Biodiversity Reserve, Kohima

The 2,000 hectare Sendenyu village(s) Community Biodiversity Reserve is characterised by biological diversity of landscapes, rivulets, lakes and ponds, a natural spring source, flora and fauna, including wild edible fruits, medicinal plants and timber.

The alarming depletion of the rich flora and fauna of the area within the span of one generation was caused by excessive logging, hunting and jhum cultivation. The community felt the need to take drastic steps to preserve and protect their rich biological diversity heritage. The people unanimously decided to initiate community conservation within the Sendenyu ancestral land. The Sendenyu Village Council established Sendenyu Community Biodiversity Reserve in 2001, wherein hunting of wild animals and burning of forest was been banned.
