Palam Noyak Community Conserved Area, Pongching, Longleng

One of the oldest villages in the region, Pongching, inhabited by the Phom tribe, is where the 300-hectare Palam Noyak Community conserved area is located. This conserved area is an important catchment area, serving as the source of drinking as well as irrigation water for many villages. During the late 2000s, intensive jhum cultivation in and around the catchment area, led to the drying up of several perennial streams, resulting in the shortage of water supply in the village. In response, the village council declared the area as a community conserved area to protect the catchment area and other natural resources by banning the extraction of timber or any other resources, restricting jhum cultivation and hunting in the area.

The efforts and commitment of the Pongching village to protect the migratory bird Amur Falcon, given that it shares its roosting site with the Yongyimchen CCA, has brought recognition to this village.
