Hongmong Conservation Area, Mon

Located in Mon, the northernmost district of Nagaland, the Hongmong Conservation Area is spread over 3,200 hectares of forested land and home to several species of birds and animals. The region holds an important catchment area for two of the main tributaries of rivers Tehok and Moka, which serve as a lifeline for many villages. The altitude of the conservation area ranges from 1,180 metres at the lowest to about 2,200 metres at its highest point, which lends the landscape a varied and interesting topography.

In 2009, with the support of external agencies, the communities of six villages – Angphang, Yei, Yonghong, Chingha, Chingkao, Chingnyu, and Wangti – the Hongmong Conservation Area was formed to protect the water catchment areas and their biodiversity. A joint management committee was formed to manage and enforce rules and regulation.

Wildlife watch: The area is home to several species of birds and animals, including the state bird of Nagaland, Blythe’s Tragopan, as well as Red Serow, Clouded Leopard, and Sambar.
